Syracuse, NY – May 2017 / Newsmaker Alert / Legendary Texas blues band The Fabulous Thunderbirds return to the Great New York State Fair for the first time in 30 years for a 2 p.m. show on Friday, Aug. 25 at Chevy Court, Acting Fair Director Troy Waffner announced Tuesday (May 2).

Kim Wilson founded the Thunderbirds in 1974. His hard-edged vocals helped the band’s best-known single, “Tuff Enuff,” crack the top 10 of the Billboard charts and become part of the soundtrack of two major films in 1986. Wilson calls the T-birds “an American band,” because they have blended many styles of music into their base of traditional blues. The great bluesman Muddy Waters once called Wilson his favorite harmonica player.

“You can hear the history of modern American popular music in the songs of the Fabulous Thunderbirds. This will be a show that people should circle on their calendars. We’re very happy to have them back after a long time away,” said Waffner.

The Fabulous Thunderbirds’ only other performance at the Fair was on August 31, 1987.

The Fabulous Thunderbirds join a star-studded and diverse lineup that includes:

  • Robert Randolph and the Family Band, 2 pm, August 23
  • 3 Doors Down, 8 pm, August 23
  • Peter Noone, 2 pm, August 28
  • The Marshall Tucker Band, 2 pm, August 29
  • Taylor Dayne, 2 pm, August 30
Concerts at Chevy Court are sponsored by Chevrolet. All Chevy Court shows are free with Fair admission.

About the Great New York State Fair
The New York State Fair, operated by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, runs from August 23 to September 4, 2017. The Fair’s mission, reflected in its theme, “Find Your Great...,” is to showcase the best of New York agriculture while providing top-quality entertainment.

The 375-acre New York State Fairgrounds is undergoing the most significant transformation since it first opened its gates in 1890. The $50 million plan, announced by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, revitalizes the grounds in many ways, improving the quality of the fairgoer’s experience and providing greater economic benefits for the region. Improvements include the dramatic new Main Gate— the arches of which recall the carriage gate that greeted fairgoers in 1900, a larger, 15-acre Wade Shows Midway that will hold more rides than ever, and the brand new 315-site Empire RV Park with underground water, sewer and electrical service. The plan will better position the New York State Fairgrounds as a premier year-round, multi-use facility that can attract more events and visitors from across the nation. A year-round schedule of events is available on the Fair’s website.
