Architectural Concepts Selected to Design Golden Road Brewery’s Roll Out | |  Golden
Road Brewery founded in 2011 has set on a journey to share their craft
beer in a series of infill open-air brew pubs sprinkled up the coast in
California. Guiding them with planning and design is San Diego based Architecture
firm Architectural Concepts Inc. (ACI) and landscape firm Schmidt Design
Group.
The infill projects (utilizing un-developed lots) are taking over defunct parking lots in urban settings creating a pedestrian outdoor pub that brews beer on site, offers pub fare, games and general festive social environments. Shipping containers are utilized as the architectural shells to house all functions including the kitchen and brew house. The environment is further boosted by the bold colorful graphics on the containers. Signature trees are being used to create shade for alfresco dining with added ambiance provided by overhead market lights. Other signature features include large social fire pits, repurposed kegs and barrels as planters for herbs and vegetables, and popular games such as Giant Jenga, Giant Connect Four, and Corn Hole. Citrus trees will also be planted with the intention of pairing the fruit with the freshly brewed beer. Following the successful model of Golden Road’s original location in Los Angeles’ Atwater Village, the pubs are kid and pup friendly. “It is challenging for building officials to process the containers due to their being shell-structures; but the great feedback from the communities we are engaging makes up for the trouble,” said Margit Whitlock AIA, Principal of ACI. First out of the ground is in Sacramento at 1830 L. Street. Next in the planning stages is in Oakland at 320 40th Street.
