ARC Reports Increase in October 2017 Air Ticket Sales

Passenger Trips Also Increased More Than Five Percent
|
Arlington, VA – November 2017 / Newsmaker Alert / The Airlines Reporting Corp. (ARC) reports that the average U.S. roundtrip ticket price* for October 2017 was $484, up from $467 in September. Average October 2017 ticket prices are up .7 percent compared to October 2016.

The consolidated dollar value of airline tickets sold by U.S.-based travel agencies increased 7 percent in October as compared to October 2016, totaling $7.4 billion vs. $6.9 billion. The number of passenger trips* settled by ARC for U.S. travel agencies also increased 5.2 percent to 22,417,336 compared to 21,307,750 in October 2016.

Electronic Miscellaneous Document (EMD)** sales in October 2017 comprised almost $5.8 million, an 8.5 percent increase over October 2016. EMD transactions decreased 7.2 percent to 99,740 in October 2017 vs. 107,447 in 2016.

*Ticket Sales

  • Results are based on monthly sales data ending October 31, 2017, from 12,197 U.S. retail and corporate travel agency locations, satellite ticket printing offices and online travel agencies. Results do not include sales of tickets purchased directly from airlines.
  • Average ticket price (in USD) for a roundtrip ticket settled through ARC for an itinerary that included only U.S. domestic travel.
  • Passenger trips include the total number of passengers taking a trip from one airport to another using either direct or connecting flights. Newly issued trips are added and refunded trips are deducted to provide a net view of traveling passengers.
  • Total sales are equal to the total amount paid for a ticket, which includes taxes and fees.

  • Includes fees for products and services such as upgraded seats, checked luggage, an unaccompanied minor, pet-in-cabin, etc.
