2015 Live Racing Season Concludes at Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack

Oscar Gomez rides three winners on closing day card
|
Farmington, NY – December 2015 / Newsmaker Alert / The 2015 live thoroughbred racing season at Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack (FLGR) concluded on Wednesday, December 9. Jockey Oscar Gomez enjoyed the closing day card with three visits to the winners circle.

Gomez completed the hat trick aboard Can’t Catch This in the seventh race. He directed the 3-year-old filly to a one-half length win for trainer John Grabowski.

The 43-year-old journeyman from Guatemala registered his 100th win of the meet with Can’t Catch This. He finished the season ranked fifth in the local rider standings.

Top Performers

Breakin the Fever won the honor of FLGR “Horse of the Year” for 2015. The 3-year-old New York-bred owned and trained by Debra Breed won seven of his nine FLGR starts this year.

The classy gelding achieved all of his 2015 victories under the guidance of Oscar Gomez. He won two stakes and amassed a sum of $126,211 in purse earnings at FLGR this season.

Jaime Rodriguez won his third consecutive FLGR title in 2015 and became the first jockey since 2006 to surpass the single season win mark of 200. His final tally of 203 victories was the most at FLGR since John Grabowski’s record total of 233 triumphs in 2000.

Chris Englehart continued his dominance in the FLGR trainer standings. He was the top conditioner for the thirteenth consecutive year. Englehart saddled 122 winning horses to earn his fifteenth career trainer title.

2015 Highlights

Two FLGR trainers reached the 1,000 mark in career wins this year. Dan Conway, Jr. and Ralph D’Alessandro both achieved the milestone during the 2015 meet.

Jockey Joel Cruz also earned his 1,000th victory at FLGR this season. He guided Distorted Dream to a four and three-quarter length victory in the eighth race on Thursday, August 6 to accomplish the mark.

Jockey John Davila, Jr. became only the second FLGR jockey to notch his 3,500th career win. The 51-year-old from Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico directed Hurry Up Alan to victory in the eighth race on Thursday, October 15 to earn the milestone.|

Two new members were officially inducted into the FLGR Hall of Fame this year. Michael S. Ferraro and Dr. Robert Carr were recognized for their talent and past achievements.

Michael S. Ferraro was the top FLGR trainer a record 18 times. He won a total of 47 stakes including the Grade 1 Whitney Handicap with Fio Rito in 1981.

Dr. Carr spent approximately 40 years as an equine practitioner at FLGR. He began his career immediately after completing his education in Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University in 1963.

Finger Lakes will remain in operation during the winter months for simulcast wagering with up to seven tracks per day. Live thoroughbred action will resume in April with the start of the 2016 meet.
