Birding a Boon at Big Bend National Park This Spring, Summer
|
Flock to Chisos Mountains Lodge, Spy 450 Different Species Including
Elusive Colima Warbler and Enjoy 25 percent off Rates June 1 through Aug. 31

Big Bend National Park, TX – February 2014 / Newsmaker Alert / Forever ResortsChisos Mountains Lodge in Big Bend National Park transforms into a bird-lovers’ headquarters each spring and summer as avid birders make the historic lodge their base of operations as they seek out hundreds of bird species, including the elusive Colima warbler. Each morning, from Valentine’s Day through September, birders gather early and head out for a chance to catch a glimpse of the sought-after Colima warbler and—if they’re really fortunate—snap a photo of it.

In addition to the draw of world-class birding, visitors to Chisos Mountains Lodge during the summer months can look forward to enjoying stunning sunsets, star gazing, wildflower blooms, active local wildlife, spectacular thunderstorms and cooler desert temperatures at 5,400 feet above sea level. Even more enticing—from June 1 through Aug. 31, Chisos Mountains Lodge is offering 25 percent off regular room rates.

This large gray and brown Colima warbler has a distinctive yellow rump and lives exclusively in the Chisos Mountains in western Texas and Sierra Madre Occidental of northeastern Mexico. Big Bend National Park recognizes the importance of the region to the Colima warbler by protecting and monitoring its breeding habitat. As a result, the Big Bend population of these birds has remained stable for the last 30 years, which attracts birders from early spring through September.

In addition to the Colima warbler, birders at Big Bend National Park have nearly 450 different species to spot in the area. Due to its variety of habitats, including open desert, desert springs, moist forested canyons and pinyon-oak-juniper woodlands, Big Bend is home to numerous excellent birding locations. As a result, Chisos Mountains Lodge welcomes not only leisure birders, but also academic study groups from universities, which venture to the park during their spring breaks.

Rates inside Big Bend National Park at Chisos Mountains Lodge start at $132 per night, while RV sites at Forever Resorts’ Rio Grande Village start at $35 per night. Three miles outside of the park, accommodations at Forever Resorts Big Bend Resort and Adventures start at $69.95 per night.
