Kanab, UT – August 2016 / Newsmaker Alert / Scottsdale-based resort operator Forever Resorts has purchased Parry Lodge and Denny’s Wigwam, home to the Iron Horse Restaurant & Saloon, in Kanab, Utah.

Parry Lodge is Kanab’s picturesque, 85-year-old property listed on the National Register of Historic Places and known for hosting movie stars and crews shooting films amidst the area’s stunning scenery. Situated in the heart of downtown Kanab, the Western-themed Denny’s Wigwam houses a gift shop, Kanab’s only full-service bar as well as the Iron Horse Restaurant, known for its hand trimmed and open-flame-grilled Black Angus beef, Colorado and Utah buffalo, mesquite smoked barbecue, and fresh Atlantic salmon. The company also launched Forever Adventure Tours in Kanab, four distinctive Hummer tours of the area’s surrounding natural and archaeological sites.

Forever Resorts purchased the properties because the company’s Founder and CEO Rex Maughan has had a lifelong appreciation for the Kanab area. Also, Maughan is passionate about places that encourage people to get outdoors and explore our nation’s most beautiful recreational destinations.

Forever Resorts Acquires Parry Lodge and Denny's Wigwam, Launches Hummer Adventure Tours in Kanab, Utah

Forever Adventure Tours affords visitors an experienced guide to explore several these surrounding natural points of interest via the comforts of a Hummer. Some of the tours include the exquisite Peekaboo Slot Canyon and Grand Staircase (2 to 3 hours); Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park where dinosaur tracks are preserved (2 to 3 hours); Native American petroglyphs (2 to 3 hours); and the Kanab Overlook (1 to 2 hours). Photos of the new Forever Adventures Hummer Tours may be found here.

Parry Lodge’s newly remodeled public areas maintain their historic ambience; while its 90 guest rooms include choices of two King beds or two Queen bedded rooms, single units and family suites. On site amenities provide guests an affordable restaurant known for its home-style cooking for breakfast and lunch; a heated outdoor pool; guest laundry facilities, and during the summer a free evening western movie in the Old Barn Theater. Pet-friendly rooms are available and shopping, museums, and visitor information center are located nearby.

At the property’s nearly 100-year-old Old Barn Theatre, which occupies the center of the Parry Lodge complex, guests can watch some of the iconic films filmed in the area. Once a working barn, the building previously housed real horses who portrayed memorable equine characters, including Roy Roger’s “Trigger,” the Lone Ranger’s “Silver” and Tonto’s “Scout.”

Long known as the “home to the stars,” Parry Lodge has famously hosted some of the 20th century’s most celebrated TV and movie stars who were shooting on location in the region. Lodge founders and brothers, Whitney, Chauncey and Gronway Parry, had their first taste of the film business while assisting with transportation needs of “Deadwood Coach,” the first film shot in Southern Utah in 1924. They enjoyed this experience so much—and profited from it, too—they opened the Parry Lodge in 1931 specifically to house casts and crews. Armed with hundreds of photographs of the area’s scenic locations, the Parry brothers made numerous visits to Hollywood, calling on studio executives and location scouts. Their efforts were enormously successful and more than 100 feature films and hundreds of television series episodes were shot in whole or in part around Kanab.

Hollywood icons who have stayed at Parry Lodge include John Wayne, Frank Sinatra, Jane Russell, Sidney Poitier, Charlton Heston, Clint Eastwood, Dan Martin, Ronald Reagan, Anne Bancroft, Roy Rogers, Sammy Davis, Jr., Ava Gardner, Burl Ives and Maureen O’Hara, among others. Films shot against the backdrop of Kanab’s distinctive scenery include “Wagon Train” (1940), “Arabian Nights” (1942), “Pony Express” (1953), “The Lone Ranger” (1956), “Planet of the Apes” (1968 and 2001) and “Maverick” (1994), Among the TV shows shot in the area, standouts include “Gunsmoke,” “Grizzly Adams,” “Daniel Boone,” “Lassie” and “The Lone Ranger.”

Moving forward, Forever Resorts remains committed to preserving the property’s distinctive, homey ambience, but also plans to enhance guests’ experiences by enhancing the guestrooms with film and TV memorabilia to commemorate the property’s storied past. Above all, Parry Lodge will continue to be a beloved part of Kanab’s warm and welcoming community.
