New York State Thruway Authority and Canal Corporation
Launch Mobile Version of Thruway Website, Social Media Pages

Enhanced web presence will make information more accessible for smart phone users

Albany, NY – March 2014 / Newsmaker Alert / New York State Thruway Authority and Canal Corporation Chairman Howard P. Milstein has announced the launch of official Thruway Facebook and Twitter pages as well as a mobile version of the Thruway website adapted for smart phone users.

The Thruway introduced a twitter account (@ThruwayTraffic) with real-time traffic alerts, or TRANSalerts, last year. Canal Corporation Facebook and Twitter pages were also launched last year.

“The new mobile version of our website will help to ease motorists’ trips on the New York Thruway by making real time information more accessible on smart phones and our Twitter feeds and Facebook page will enhance their travels,” said Chairman Milstein. “The New York Thruway is one of the nation’s premier superhighways, and we continue to find ways to provide the best possible traveling experience for our customers.”

“Making information easier to access through social media enhances the Thruway’s excellent reputation for safety and reliability and offers motorists more choices,” said Thruway Authority Executive Director Thomas J. Madison. “While this new tool is very useful, please remember that texting while driving is against the law, and travelers should only check smart phones before starting their trips, or while taking a break at one of the many text stops along the Thruway.”

“Tourism along the canal is a powerhouse that generates nearly $380 million in annual economic activity and social media is already helping us grow that number by reaching an entirely new audience,” said Canal Corporation Director Brian U. Stratton. “These new social media avenues have given us the opportunity to create a buzz and show potential visitors exactly what we mean when we say that New York’s Canals are rich with history, recreational opportunities and family fun.”

The mobile version of the Thruway website was designed and implemented internally as part of the Thruway’s commitment to provide motorists with as much information as possible. The site offers Thruway customers a condensed, user-friendly way to check traffic conditions, view traffic cameras, calculate tolls, and find the nearest travel plaza, exit, or location where E-ZPass is sold. Smart phone users will automatically be redirected to the mobile version of the site when they access Thruway.NY.gov.

Thruway Authority and Canal Corporation Facebook and Twitter pages will include press releases, photos, and other useful information that will be posted for easy access by those who ‘Like’ or ‘Follow’ the pages. A separate Thruway Twitter account (@ThruwayTraffic) posts all traffic alerts, or TRANSalerts, in real time.

Motorists are reminded that the new mobile version of the Thruway website and social media pages should only be accessed before starting a trip, or while taking a break at a text stop on the Thruway or other state highways. Text stops are locations designated for the use of mobile devices as part of the State’s effort to combat distracted driving. For the complete list of statewide ‘Text Stops’, see Governor Cuomo’s press release.
