Olympia Hotel Management to
Operate The Glen House, Mt. Washington, New Hampshire

Green’s Grant, NH – February 2017 / Newsmaker Alert / Olympia Hotel Management has been selected by the Mt. Washington Summit Road Company (MWSRC) to operate The Glen House, which will be built in Pinkham Notch near the base of the Mt. Washington Auto Road. Half a century since the last Glen House stood on this site, the family-owned MWSRC, which has operated the Mt. Washington Auto Road since 1906, intends to have the fifth iteration of the hotel open by May 2018.

Olympia Hotel Management has “the background, experience and depth within their organization that we needed to successfully market and operate the next Glen House,” said Howie Wemyss, General Manager of the Mt. Washington Auto Road. “They have the involvement with independent hotels and the on-the-ground practical experience of running hotels that we were seeking in a management partner.”

The 68-room hotel will be built on the west side of Route 16 in Green’s Grant on a site owned by MWSRC and will feature a pool and restaurant. Half of the rooms will have balconies facing Mt. Washington, which at an elevation of 6,288 feet is the highest summit in the Northeast.

Aesthetically, the hotel will be built in classic New England vernacular, with clapboards, painted trim and signature chimneys, similar to the previous four Glen Houses that have stood on this site since 1852. The design of the guestrooms is reflective of the simplicity of Shaker design while the public spaces embrace both the history of the Mt Washington Auto Road and local Native American roots.

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with The Glen House,” said Sara Masterson of Olympia Hotel Management. “They represent the kind of distinctive, independent hotel property that we’ve worked with so successfully across the country.”

Olympia Hotel Management, based in Portland, Maine, is a leader in developing and managing independent hotel properties that are noteworthy for innovation in green energy. The Glen House will be close to energy sufficient and carbon neutral, thanks to a geo-thermal system that will provide heating and cooling as well as two offsite energy-generating projects harnessing hydro and solar power. Three New Hampshire firms have been enlisted to build The Glen House: BMA Architectural Group of Amherst, Stibler Associates LLC of Manchester as interior designers and Martini Northern of Portsmouth as contractors.

The three-story hotel will serve guests visiting the Auto Road and taking advantage of the winter and summer offerings of Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center, which offers hiking, mountain biking and fly fishing in summer. Winter activities include Nordic skiing on 45 kilometers of classic and skate-groomed trails, snowshoeing, snow tubing and winter tours up the mountain on the Mt. Washington SnowCoach.

Scheduled to break ground in the spring of 2017, The Glen House is anticipating an open date prior to Memorial Day 2018.
