Back To News/PR Index | | Best of the Best: Hilton Head Island and Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort | Reader scores were based on natural attractions and beaches, sights and activities, friendliness, food and overall value of the world’s top islands. “Our No. 1 this year? An outpost of Southern hospitality and traditional American recreation,” wrote the Travel + Leisure editors. “The best islands in the continental U.S. share an ability to slow down the hands of time: to recall simpler times and slower, laid-back living.” Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort on Hilton Head has long represented the best the island has to offer. For nearly a half-century, generations of families from across the globe have enjoyed Palmetto Dunes’ seemingly infinite bounty of outdoor activities with a family focus: World-class golf and award-winning tennis, fishing, kayaking, canoeing and paddle boarding on an 11-mile lagoon system, bicycling, dining and shopping, all of it along a three-mile stretch of pristine Atlantic Ocean beachfront. Palmetto Dunes is designed for families to get active together by offering a variety of ways to do just that — including its Hilton Head Family Golf School. Whatever levels at which a family may play, Palmetto Dunes will tailor its golf school to specific needs and skill level. Its head of golf instruction, former PGA TOUR player Doug Weaver, is great with kids and teaches them moves like “closing the car door” and “alligator arms” to help them learn golf in a fun and engaging way. The golf school includes a video analysis sent by email, on-course instruction, rules and etiquette lessons, the school’s video lending library, take-home materials, lunch daily, free range privileges, plus nine holes of golf daily on a space-available basis and 25 percent discount on rentals such as bikes, kayaks and canoes from Hilton Head Outfitters. Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort caters to golfers of all levels, having installed permanent junior tees on its Robert Trent Jones golf course, while the George Fazio course caters to juniors. The Fazio junior tees measure 3,384 yards for 18 holes, with the longest hole (No. 10) measuring 316 yards. Holes range between 90 and 316 yards. In addition, kids 10 and under play free after 4 PM at the Robert Trent Jones Hilton Head golf course and the Arthur Hills golf course with an adult paying regular rate. This summer, the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy features lessons and clinics for all ages and skill levels. “Little Swingers” is offered Monday through Wednesday from 5:15 PM - 6 PM for $25 (ages 3-7) at the Robert Trent Jones Course. The “Junior Morning and Afternoon Clinic” occurs Monday through Thursday at 4 PM for $25 (ages 6-18) at the Robert Trent Jones Course and focuses on different aspects of the game every class. In addition, Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort recently added the club fitting, building and repair services of SwingFit, formerly Golf Etc. Hilton Head. SwingFit is owned and operated by Chris Wycoff, who has been named one of Golf Digest magazine’s “Top 100 Club Fitters.” About
