“This
is truly a historic moment and a major win for the large Cuban American
population interested in visiting the many destinations in Cuba beyond
Havana,” said Silver Airways President and CEO Sami Teittinen. “This substantial
award of routes by the U.S. DOT reaffirms Silver’s position as ‘the’ airline
of choice not only in the Bahamas and Florida but now Cuba as well. Serving
all nine non-Havana routes, as we have consistently said, is dependent
on Silver being awarded routes to Havana. We eagerly await the DOT’s approval
of our Havana service request.”
“We
are honored to be the only airline awarded authority to serve all nine
non-Havana destinations. However, Havana remains a critical component of
Silver’s growth strategy in Cuba. Thousands of Cuban Americans will continue
to be alienated from their family and friends if Silver is not granted
direct service to Havana from West Palm Beach, Fort Myers, Key West, and
Jacksonville,” said Jason Bewley, Silver Airways CFO and Executive Vice
President Commercial. “Silver is the only carrier that can fly these travelers
home to their families without forcing them to endure long drives to distant
airports or requiring them to make time-wasting connections which unfortunately
is what the other airlines have proposed for residents of these important
Cuban-American communities here in Florida.”
Silver
Airways flights are operated with its fleet of 22 highly reliable and fuel-efficient
34-seat Saab 340B Plus turbo-prop aircraft.
