Los Angeles, CA – July 2016 / Newsmaker Alert / From our special section on destination marketing (page 19) to our exclusive interview with the commissioner of Major League Baseball (page 104), the July issue of SportsTravel helps make clear the connection between the travel industry and the world of sporting events. Produced in conjunction with Destination Marketing Association International, the special section delves into the changing environment in which destination marketing organizations and event organizers find themselves and is intended to foster greater understanding and mutual cooperation between event hosts and event organizers.

A Deep Bench, by Timothy Schneider, Publisher, SportsTravelIn many ways, that same goal is at the core of the TEAMS Conference & Expo, which serves as the sports-specific meeting place for event organizers and those who want to host their events. In constructing the TEAMS ’16 Conference program, we’ve placed a priority on providing the best assembly of sports-industry thought leaders available anywhere. TEAMS ‘16 will feature six tracks of specialized programming, including tracks devoted to event operations, host cities, technology, the law and ethics, sponsorship and a by-invitation-only track for sports-organization CEOs and executive directors. Here are just a few of the thought leaders who will be at TEAMS ’16, ready to share their insights:
  • Doug Beal of USA Volleyball, Steve Penny of USA Gymnastics and Chuck Wielgus of USA Swimming, three of the longest-tenured and most successful CEOs for national governing bodies of U.S. Olympic sports
  • Joe De Sena, founder of Spartan Race, which has become one of the world’s most successful obstacle races since its founding in 2010
  • Michael Kelly, chief operating officer of the College Football Playoff, a former associate SEC commissioner and the only person to serve as lead local executive for three Super Bowl host committees in three different cities (Tampa, Jacksonville, South Florida)
  • Michael Coco of Red Frog Events, who will share how his organization applies lessons learned from music and entertainment events to its Warrior Dash Series, and Nathan Lindberg of Twitch, who serves as director of e-sports for the emerging video platform
  • Rich Young of the law firm Bryan Cave and Jeff Novitzky, now with the UFC, both of whom have played central roles in anti-doping efforts and helped make the cases against Lance Armstrong and Marion Jones
  • Other expert presenters will include Tim Reed of ESPN’s X Games, Ben Sturner, founder and CEO of Leverage Agency, Nicholas Horbaczewski, founder and CEO of the Drone Racing League, and Mike Nichols, chief business officer of the Symetra LPGA Tour.
