Atlanta,
GA – June 2018 / Newsmaker Alert / A
promotional poster for the newly launched U.S.
Civil Rights Trail featuring the International Civil Rights Center
& Museum in Greensboro, N.C., won recognition from the American Advertising
Federation at the 2018 ADDY Awards presentation in Chicago. The Civil Rights
Trail was launched in January through Travel
South USA, a destination marketing organization with membership from
12 states.

The
winning poster, designed by Luckie
& Co. from Birmingham, Ala., highlighted a pivotal moment in the
civil rights movement: the 1960 protest led by four students at the F.W.
Woolworth store in downtown Greensboro, which activated the sit-in movement
across the South. The Woolworth’s building now houses the International
Civil Rights Center, one of more than 100 sites on the trail.
“We
are gratified by the Advertising Foundation’s recognition of the work done
to let the world know about the U.S. Civil Rights Trail,” said Wit Tuttell,
Travel South’s board chair and the director of Visit
North Carolina. “The trail’s creation draws focus to a critical era
in American history and also underscores the value of collaboration, a
hallmark of Travel South’s success in marketing our region.”
The
Alabama Tourism Department conceived
the project and laid the groundwork for the trail, whose launch coincided
with the 2018 Martin Luther King holiday. With Travel South’s commitment
and the participation of other state tourism organizations, the trail grew
into a curated collection of destinations and landmarks in 14 states and
the District of Columbia.
At
the June 8 awards ceremony in Chicago, the Civil Rights Trail earned a
Silver ADDY in the “Out-of-Home & Ambient Media — Poster — Single Unit”
category. The ADDYs are the advertising industry’s largest and most representative
competition, attracting more than 40,000 entries through local American
Advertising Federation Club competitions. A Gold Addy represents the highest
level of excellence; Silver signifies outstanding achievement that’s deemed
worthy of national recognition.
“This
U.S. Civil Rights Trail initiative has been one of the most impactful our
firm had ever worked on,” said John Gardner, president of Luckie &
Co. “Many of the major events along what is now the Civil Rights Tail took
place in our home communities, and we are proud to help tell the amazing
story that impacted a nation.”
About
the U.S. Civil Rights Trail
