Veterans Day parade, 5K and Vietnam 50th anniversary set for Owensboro

Owensboro, KY – November 2015 / Newsmaker Alert / Owensboro pays tribute to armed forces veterans with a parade, 5K run/walk and commemorative event marking the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War.

The Owensboro Veterans Day Parade is Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. The parade begins at Second Street in downtown. For more information call 270-687-4444.

The Kentucky Remembers Veterans Day 5K Run/Walk is Nov. 7 at 8 a.m. Participants will be given American flags to carry along the route that begins at Smothers Park.

The event honors fallen military heroes and sacrifices made by first responders. A moment of silence will be observed for three Kentucky State Police state troopers who died this year.

Proceeds benefit local and state veterans support organizations, including the Bluegrass Chapter of the Honor Flight, which funds expenses for wartime veterans to visit memorials in Washington. D.C. Other event beneficiaries are Honor and Remember, a provider of American flags to families of slain soldiers, and the Warrior 180 Project, which provides resources for soldiers with post-traumatic shock disorder.

Vietnam War veterans from Daviess and surrounding counties will be honored at the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War Commemoration Service. The event on Nov. 8 begins at 3:30 p.m. at Good Shepherd Church, 3031 Bittel Road.

The program will feature special guests and speakers, including Daviess County Sheriff Keith Cain, a U.S. Marine Corps and Vietnam veteran.

As part of the anniversary, the Daviess County Public Library is collecting photographs of Vietnam-era veterans for posting at the ceremony and elsewhere. Family members can share photos and complete an information form at the library (2020 Frederica Street; phone 270-684-0211).
