Wilmington, NC – May 2015 / Newsmaker Alert / What could be finer than to be in Wilmington, North Carolina on a midsummer night, watching a free Shakespeare performance under the stars? The outdoor stage is set for Cape Fear Shakespeare on the Green, an annual festival held every weekend in June at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater. Now in its 23rd season, the annual free-to-the-public Cape Fear Shakespeare on the Green Festival, in association with the City of Wilmington, will present two shows: “All’s Well That Ends Well” and “The Taming of the Shrew.

Themes of William Shakespeare’s plays continue to resonate with modern audiences. Have you ever wondered where oft-quoted lines originated, such as: “Love all, trust a few, do wrong to none...” and “There’s small choice in rotten apples…”? Look no further than Shakespeare’s masterpieces “All’s Well That Ends Well” and “The Taming of the Shrew,” respectively. Both plays are slated for the 2015 season of Cape Fear Shakespeare on the Green and will be staged on select dates in late May and throughout the month of June.

The Cape Fear Shakespeare Youth Company kicks off the season performing an original adaptation of “The Taming of the Shrew,” directed by Cherri McKay. Great care has been given to preserve and maintain the original story and Shakespearean dialogue. However, certain liberties have been taken to create and interpret the play through the eyes of youth, both educationally and artistically. Cape Fear Shakespeare Youth Company performances are staged at 8:00 p.m., Friday through Sunday, May 29, 30, 31 and Monday through Thursday, June 8-11 & Tuesday through Thursday, June 16, 17, 18.

Shakespeare’s comedy “All’s Well That Ends Well,” directed by Rob Mann, takes top billing this year. Packed with delightful one-liners and memorable quotes, the play’s plot is a clever jumble of trickery, lovers falling for the wrong person, mistaken identity, joy amidst tragedy and bawdy humor. Add the lush backdrop of Greenfield Park and you have the makings of a perfect summer outing. Performances are staged each weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) at 8:00 p.m., beginning Friday, June 5 through Sunday, June 28. Performance dates for “All’s Well That Ends Well” are June 5-7; 12-14; 19-21; and 26-28. An additional Actor Appreciation show is scheduled for Thursday, June 25.

Cape Fear Shakespeare on the Green is among Wilmington’s most anticipated summer traditions that embrace the independent spirit of Wilmington and its island beaches. Visitors and residents enjoy free productions of The Bard’s works in a family atmosphere at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater. All theatrical performances of Cape Fear Shakespeare on the Green are free to the public and donations are always welcome and appreciated. Gates open at 6:30 pm; all shows begin at 8:00 p.m.
