Dedman School Of Hospitality
– Tallahassee, FL
The strength of the Dedman School of Hospitality lies in its curriculum, faculty, and facilities. The curriculum takes a balanced approach to higher education, with students completing a strong general education core, followed by an equally strong business core encompassing approximately 40 credit hours of business classes. Students then complete a hospitality core in their junior and senior years of study. 1,000 hours of work experience are required for graduation, and internships are plentiful and available. Students in the PGM program must complete specific course required by the PGA. The faculty of the Dedman School of Hospitality also represent a mix of experiences. In addition to well-known academics, four industry professionals representing the fields of lodging, foodservice, club management, and professional golf are on staff. Average class ratio is approximately 18:1 students to faculty. The School has two separate facilities; the main facility encompasses nearly 500,000 square feet of classrooms, offices, conference rooms, restaurant, ballroom, and private club. University Of Delaware
“HRIM” - Newark, DE
The Hotel, Restaurant & Institutional Management campus program is limited to 400 students. A selective admissions process, coupled with enrollment limitations ensure that students learn to network with each other and that the faculty provides the personal attention students need for professional growth and development. The program can be characterized as large enough to lead but small enough to care. The curriculum is structured to provide both a practical and theoretical education. An integral part of the curriculum is the hospitality-related work experience. A documented and paid student work requirement of 800 hours must be completed by the senior year. These combined work experiences assist in the development of a resume that meets industry needs and simultaneously prepares students for the increasingly complex and challenging hospitality industry. The program offers the Vita Nova Restaurant, a student-operated teaching and research laboratory with a television studio and a new campus hotel is planned, which will also integrate with the HRIM curriculum. Also available is a 4+1 MBA program. Students in this 4+1 program enroll in more business courses and additional mathematics classes compared to their counterparts in the four-year HRIM program. As a consequence, these students have very strong business management skills to compliment their knowledge of operations and best practices in the hospitality industry. Their enhanced business skills will result in accelerated opportunity for growth into executive-level positions with comparable financial incentives. At the completion of 5 years (4+1), students will have a B.S. in HRIM and the MBA degree. The Department of Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Management offers a program leading to a Master of Science in Hospitality Information Management. The goal of the program is first to develop students for successful careers as corporate hospitality information managers, consultants, and hospitality systems implementation professionals, and second to offer high-quality, professional-level instruction for current hospitality managers seeking to further their education by applying technology solutions in operational settings. It is also designed to provide students interested in future doctoral work in hospitality and tourism management a sound foundation toward that goal. The University of Delaware is ideally located for a hospitality program. Job opportunities in the Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland metropolitan areas are unlimited. Within 350 miles of the university resides one-third of the U.S. population - career opportunities are abundant. Students who desire part-time work will find outstanding employment opportunities in the local area. Annually, the University of Delaware becomes the center for recruitment in the Mid-Atlantic area. Colleges and universities in the region bond together as members of the Council on Hotel, Restaurant & Institutional Education (CHRIE), to sponsor a career fair on the University campus. Recruiters from all sectors of the industry participate. The University of Delaware is also a participating member of the Walt Disney College Program where students have an opportunity to compete for a work experience with Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. ARAMARK and Marriott International also offer structured internships. College Of Charleston
- Hospitality & Tourism Management - Charleston, SC
Founded in 1770 and chartered in 1785, the College of Charleston is the oldest institution of higher education in the state of South Carolina and the thirteenth oldest in the United States. The founders of the College, who sought "to encourage and institute youth in the several branches of liberal education," included three signers of the Declaration of Independence and three fathers of the United States Constitution. In 1836 the College of Charleston became the nation's first municipal college when the city of Charleston assumed responsibility for its support and mandated that the College be a "Popular Institution, intended for the great body of the people." These two early principles, a commitment to the liberal arts and a responsibility to the citizens of the region, have guided the College throughout its history. Incorporated into South Carolina's State System in 1970, the College began to serve a much broader region. Whereas the first class conducted at the College contained about a dozen Charlestonians, the student body now numbers approximately 12,000 undergraduate students and nearly 2,000 graduate students, 75 percent of whom are South Carolinians; other students come from 46 states and 62 foreign countries. The enduring commitment to the liberal arts is seen in the course curriculum of the College which requires study in English, history, modern or classical languages, math, science, humanities, the arts and social sciences. At the same time, the College has expanded its offerings to include new and emerging fields of study. The 225-year-old history of the College is rich in the stories of the men and women who have learned and taught here, in the beautiful buildings that have housed them, and in the changes that each generation made to meet its responsibilities to knowledge and society. Under the leadership of its nineteenth President, Alexander M. Sanders, Jr., the College looks forward to retaining its traditions while responding to the needs of a changing society.
